Alleged Lamar County thief caught in Lowndes County

LOWNDES COUNTY, Miss. (WCBI) – A man wanted in Lamar County, Alabama has been captured in Lowndes County.

Richard Mordecai, 45, will be charged with theft in the first degree and eluding, along with minor traffic charges by Lamar County deputies.

The Mississippi Department of Corrections has a hold on Mordecai and he remains in jail.

Lamar County Sheriff Hal Allred saID deputies tried to Mordecai over on Walnut Grove Road this past weekend, while he was driving a stolen car.

The Vernon man eventually crashed and ran away. A little while later another car was reported stolen in the area.

Lowndes County deputies eventually caught up with him and made the arrest.

Mordecai is not expected to face any new charges in Mississippi.

Several juveniles charged in connection to Lee County school shooting threats

TUPELO, Miss. (WCBI) –  A 12-year-old will be processed through youth court after deputies allege the juvenile threatened to shoot up Nettleton School.

Lee County Sheriff Jim Johnson said the department got a tip about the threat Sunday.

Investigators said several other juveniles were also involved. As a precaution, there was extra police at the school on Monday.

This threat comes after the sheriff’s department also investigated social media threats on August 16 at Okolona and Shannon schools. Those campuses were put on a partial lockdown last week.

Three juveniles connected to that threat will appear in youth court at a later date. Their ages range from 14-15 years old. The sheriff’s department said the student who made the threat does not go to Shannon High School.

Sheriff Johnson said the department will continue to monitor the situation and will take steps necessary to keep school campuses safe.

Choctaw County deputies searching for suspected burglar

CHOCTAW COUNTY, Miss. (WCBI) – Choctaw County deputies are asking for your help to find a suspected burglar.

25-year-old Deandre Dotson is wanted for burglary. He’s 6’4 and weighs about 140 pounds.

Investigators said one burglary happened on Pensacola Road.

He could be in a Lincoln Town Car or Mercury Grand Marque, both would have a Choctaw County license plate.

Dotson is out on bond for another burglary arrest.

Columbus man indicted on two counts aggravated assault

COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) – A Columbus man has been indicted for an alleged shooting from earlier this year.

Kevis Hill was indicted on two counts of aggravated assault and one count of possession of cocaine.

He’s accused of shooting at two people on March 19.

Columbus police told WCBI the incident started on Waterworks Road after an argument.

Gunfire was exchanged and a car was shot-up.

Officers caught up with the suspects in east Columbus and made the arrest.

Pickens County, Alabama chief deputy arrested

PICKENS COUNTY, Ala. (WCBI) –  The Pickens County Chief Deputy has been arrested and is facing criminal charges.

Chief Deputy Jonathan Gann was arrested by agents with the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency’s State Bureau of Investigation Tuesday.

He’s been charged with Theft of Property in the Second Degree and Tampering with Evidence.

The SBI investigated the allegations at the request of the District Attorney Andy Hamlin and Pickens County Sheriff Todd Hall.

Gann was held in Tuscaloosa County Jail before he bonded out.

No other details are being released at this time as the case is still under investigation.

Man accused of home repair fraud in Monroe County

MONROE COUNTY, Miss. (WCBI) – A Water Valley man was accused of not repairing a home in Monroe County.

Steven Baker, 39, was arrested Wednesday.

He’s charged with one count of home repair fraud.

Monroe County investigators declined to release any information on the arrest, citing an on-going investigation.

Justice Court documents showed the victim filed an affidavit against Baker.

The victim said he and Baker entered into an agreement on July 15 but no work was done on the home repair.

Baker remains in jail.

Woman pleads guilty to aggravated assault

COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) – A Columbus woman has pled guilty to aggravated assault.

Rennie Gibbs will spend four years in prison for cutting a man on the arm back in April 2018.

Prosecutors said broken glass was used in the crime.

Under the plea deal, she will receive credit for time served.

Gibbs will also be on probation for five years after being released from prison.

Columbus policeman not indicted for deadly officer-involved shooting

LOWNDES COUNTY, Miss. (WCBI) – A Lowndes County Grand Jury did not indict a Columbus policeman involved in a deadly officer-involved shooting.

The shooting happened in November 2017 outside of the Premier Lounge on 22nd Street South.

Officer Jared Booth was called to the nightclub about a disturbance.

At that time, sources told WCBI that Booth was talking with a security guard and heard two shots. He ran toward the gunfire and saw some men fighting over a gun.

Our sources said as Ray Davis turned toward Booth, the gun was pointed at the officer. That is when Booth fired. Davis died a short time later.

The Attorney General’s office presented the case to the grand jury and confirmed the no bill results.

Ole Miss student appears in court for murder of fellow student

OXFORD, Miss. (WCBI) – Ole Miss student Brandon Theesfeld appeared in court Thursday for the murder of fellow student Ally Kostial.

Kostial was found dead, near Sardis Lake, with multiple gunshot wounds last month.

Theesfeld has been held in jail without bond since July.

Theesfeld’s defense team is made up of cousins Tony and Steve Farese, as well as Oxford attorney Swayze Alford.

They were expected to ask a Lafayette County judgeo set a bond, but withdrew their request Thursday.

Instead, the defense is asking, for a psychological evaluation.

Authorities have not detailed the relationship between Theesfeld and Kostial, but friends described it as “complicated.”

Three arrested for Lee County burglaries, investigators searching for one more suspect

LEE COUNTY, Miss. (WCBI) – Investigators with the Lee County Sheriff’s Office have arrested three people who are allegedly responsible for several burglaries.

Paula Lockhart, Christopher Griffin, and Alexis Shamlin have all been arrested and charged.

The crimes happened in August and in July.

Several homes that were either empty at the time or under construction were burglarized. The items that were taken were electronics, jewelry, checks, credit cards, tools, golf carts, ATVs, and motorcycles.

Investigators said the belongings were taken to support a meth habit.

Investigators are now looking for Hayden Hall, 21, who they think may have been involved.

A search was conducted in Plantersville this week and several items were recovered from the break-ins.

The stolen belongings were then linked to the suspects, who police say, were living in a tent city in the Auburn community.

Man dies after crashing motorcycle while allegedly running from deputies

ITAWAMBA COUNTY, Miss. (WCBI) – A Mooreville man has died after crashing his motorcycle while allegedly trying to run from law enforcement.

Itawamba County Sheriff Chris Dickinson said Wednesday, a deputy tried to pull Joel Davis Jr., 29, on New Chapel Road for speeding.

Davis allegedly tried to outrun deputies in Itawamba County before crossing into Monroe County.

The chase ended on Bigbee Road when Davis lost control of his motorcycle from loose gravel on the road.

Sheriff Dickinson said Davis was responsive after crashing and was taken to a Tupelo hospital.

Davis later died around 9:30 Thursday night.

Sheriff Dickinson said Davis was wanted in Lee County for evading arrest as well.

Two more arrests made in connection to Tupelo murder

TUPELO, Miss. (WCBI) – Two more people are facing charges in a Tupelo murder investigation.

Ricky Mallory, 53, of Tupelo, and Ryksie Brown, 45, of Nettleton, have been charged with accessory after the fact.

Mallory’s bond was set at $100,000 and Brown’s bond was set at $50,000.

Their arrests are in connection to the murder of Kelly Conway, 51, on August 12.

Conway’s body was found in a small home attached to an apartment on Eisenhower Drive.

Ambra Zinn, 31, was previously arrested and charged with murder in the case.

Zinn is being held without bond.

Man accused of threatening Oxford police, leading high-speed chase

OXFORD, Miss. (WCBI) – A Mississippi man has been arrested in Tennessee accused of threatening to shoot police officers.

Clay Tatum, 37, was charged with felony fleeing and making terroristic threats.

This all started after Oxford Police said they were at a disturbance call at the Little Caesars on University Avenue.

Tatum allegedly led officers on a high-speed chase before officers were forced to end the pursuit.

Then, police say Tatum made threats to shoot police if they tried to arrest him.

Eventually, U.S. Marshals took over the search for Tatum and found him in Memphis Monday.

Tatum is in the Lafayette County Detention Center with a $250,000 bond.

Former Ecru city clerk enters open plea to embezzlement by a public official

ECRU, Miss. (WCBI) – A former Ecru City Clerk was sentenced to a total of 60 years in prison, but may not have to serve any time behind bars.

Gretchen Moody entered an open plea to embezzlement by a public official in Pontotoc County Circuit Court.

Moody was accused of taking money being paid as fines and converting it to private use. She was also charged with using the City of Ecru’s credit card to make personal purchases, and giving herself extra paychecks.

The State Auditor’s office began investigating in 2016.

Moody was indicted by a grand jury in September 2017.

She was sentenced to 20 years in prison on the first count with 10 suspended and 5 on house arrest, and ordered to pay restitution of over 183 thousand dollars.

She will avoid any jail time if she serves out the five year house arrest and pays full restitution in that time.

She was also sentenced to 20 years each on two other counts, but those will be retired if terms of house arrest are met.

She has already repaid $75,000.

Man and woman indicted for capital murder in Columbus

COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) – A man and woman arrested in connection with a Columbus homicide have been indicted for capital murder.

Victoria Slayton and Malcolm Hill were accused of killing Marcus Pate in October 2018.

Prosecutors believed Pate was killed during a robbery inside of his 11th Street South apartment.

Hill also faces drug charges.

Slayton and Hill are both being prosecuted as habitual offenders.

Pate was found shot to death.

Investigators told WCBI at the time that drugs were possibly involved and all three people knew each other.

Bond was denied for Slayton and Hill.

TUPELO, Miss. (WCBI) – Surveillance photo’s captured the possible suspect in a car burglary.

Tupelo police are looking for this man pictured here.

The burglary happened sometime last week, at a retail store.

Police said the victim is an employee at the store. She reported several items stolen from her vehicle.

Booneville man accused of letting juveniles smoke controlled substance

PRENTISS COUNTY, Miss. (WCBI) – A Booneville man faces a child abuse charge after Prentiss County investigators said he let juveniles smoke a controlled substance.

Benny Walthers, 28, was charged with two counts of child abuse.

Deputies were called to a home in the Hare Trailer Park August 22 after they got a report Walthers allegedly let juveniles smoke the substance.

His bond is set at $75,000.

The case will be presented to the next Prentiss County Grand Jury.

Two charged in shooting of 12-year-old and 13-year-old

WINSTON, Miss. (WCBI) – We now know the names of the men facing charges in Winston County for allegedly shooting two boys.

Brothers Joe and Justin White have both been charged with two counts of aggravated assault, drive-by-shooting, and shooting into an occupied dwelling.

They remain in the Winston-Choctaw County Regional jail.

Investigators said more arrests are possible.

The shooting happened this past Thursday at the intersection of Goss Road and Minnie Miller Road.

A 12-year-old and 13-year-old were both shot outside of a home.

Winston County Sheriff Jason Pugh said, within minutes of the drive-by shooting, deputies were able to pull-over a white SUV and arrest the White brothers.

Pugh told WCBI the victims remain in a Jackson hospital.

The department is asking for information on Sharunda Hamilton, 33, of West Point.

Tupelo man facing two federal indictments for sexual exploitation of a child

TUPELO, Miss. (WCBI) – A Tupelo man arrested in May now faces two federal indictments.

Shane Ingellis, 32, of Tupelo has been accused of possessing and distributing images of children having sex.

The two-count indictment of sexual exploitation of a child said the incidents took place between January 1 and 21 of this year.

Ingellis made his initial court appearance on the charges Monday in Oxford
