Elementary school teacher charged with attempted murder

COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) – An elementary school teacher has been charged with attempted murder after allegedly driving her vehicle and her child into Columbus Lake.

34-year-old Cari Cullum was arrested over the weekend. She will officially go before a judge Monday.

Columbus police said the incident happened September 21st at the East Bank landing boat ramp on Wilkins-Wise Road.

Investigators believe Cullum drove her vehicle into the water with her toddler in the backseat of the car.

Sources told WCBI Cullum was attempting to commit suicide.

By the time officers arrived, a friend had pulled Cullum and her daughter out of the vehicle.

Police believe the car had been backed into the water.

CPD also confirmed she also charged with misdemeanor DUI back in August.

Cullum did teach at Hamilton Elementary.

Monroe County Schools Superintendent Brian Jernigan said he cannot discuss Cullum’s employment due to an ongoing personnel issue.

Cullum’s three children are in the care of another person.

Her bond has not been set.

Monroe County father charged with murder in connection to son’s death

MONROE COUNTY, Miss. (WCBI) – A Monroe County father has been charged with allegedly taking the life of his own son.

James Hester, 51, of Greenwood Springs faces one count of murder.

On Sunday, deputies responded to a home on Splunge Road in Greenwood Springs around 6:30 p.m. after a family member called to report a shooting.

When they got there they found Eddie Hester, 28, dead.

Another person at the scene, a family member, was taken to the hospital for non-life threatening injuries.

Hester’s bond was set at $50,000. He is currently being held in the Monroe County Detention Center.

Monroe County Coroner Alan Gurley said the victim’s body will be sent to the state medical examiner in Pearl for an autopsy.

Starkville woman accused of using stolen credit card

STARKVILLE, Miss. (WCBI) – A Starkville woman faces charges after being accused of using a stolen credit card.

Kayla Tate, 23, was charged with felony credit card fraud.

Tate was arrested on Friday, September 27, after a warrant was issued for her.

The stolen credit card was allegedly used several times on September 9.

Winston County man convicted of murder will not get new trial

WINSTON COUNTY, Miss. (WCBI) – A Winston County murderer will not get a new trial.

Kevin LaDexter Carter claimed the court should not have allowed prior domestic violence incidents between him and 39-year-old Angela Collier to be admitted during the trial.

Collier’s roommate and uncle testified at the trial that Carter and the victim had a violent past.

The state court of appeals found no error and upheld Carter’s conviction of second-degree murder, aggravated assault and felon in possession of a weapon.

He was sentenced to 70 years in prison.

Carter shot and killed Collier in February 2017 in a home near Noxapater.

Lowndes County Sheriff’s Department asking for help identifying convenience store burglar

LOWNDES COUNTY, Miss. (WCBI) – The Lowndes County Sheriff’s Department is asking for the public’s help to catch a convenience store crook.

In the early morning hours of September 18, deputies responded to a burglary call at the State Line Express on Highway 12.

Surveillance video showed the alleged burglar entering the building.

The suspect got away with cash and cigarettes.

Columbus man charged with two counts of arson

COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCB) – A Columbus man was accused of setting a house and car on fire.

Tamarcus Thomas, 39, was charged with two counts of arson.

Columbus Police Chief Fred Shelton said the two fires occurred at two separate locations, which are not being disclosed.

Shelton believed there is a connection between Thomas and the owner of the car.

Investigators told WCBI there has been a recent string of suspicious small fires in the city.

Other charges are possible against Thomas.

His bond was set at $20,000 Tuesday.

Lowndes County woman accused of biting, punching a child

LOWNDES COUNTY, Miss. (WCBI) – A Lowndes County woman is behind bars after allegedly biting and punching a child.

On Monday, the Lowndes County Sheriff’s Department were told about a potential child abuse case.

After investigating the claim sheriff deputies arrested Jasmine Shanklin, 29.

Shanklin allegedly bit and punched a child with a closed fist. That child is under the age of 12.

She is charged with one count of felony child abuse.

Child Protection Services is assisting with the case.

Man caught trying to escape during work detail indicted

NOXBUEE COUNTY, Miss. (WCBI) – A man accused of ditching a stolen golf cart while on a run for freedom has been indicted.

William Libby was charged with escape. A Noxubee County grand jury indicted him on the charge after the July 1 incident.

Libby was assigned to the Noxubee County Community Work Center and had been at Pine Wood Golf Course before running.

He was caught in a wooded area about an hour after his escape.

Libby could face seven years for an escape charge.

Argument over broken phone turns into stolen gun arrest

BRUCE, Miss. (WCBI) – An argument over a broken phone turned into a stolen gun arrest.

Alex Shumpert was charged with possession of a stolen firearm.

Bruce police said the victim told officers that she broke Shumpert’s phone and then he took her laptop. He also said he would return to shoot her.

Officers pulled Shumpert over and found the reported stolen gun.

He may also have charges pending in Monroe County.

Oktibbeha County deputies searching for shooting suspect

OKTIBBEHA COUNTY, Miss. (WCBI) – Oktibbeha County deputies are asking for your helping finding a shooting suspect.

Devierre Outlaw, 26, is considered armed and dangerous.

Investigators said the shooting happened September 28 on Gleason Drive. The victim was treated and released from the hospital.

Outlaw is also wanted by the Mississippi Department of Corrections.

He’s expected to be charged with aggravated assault, with other charges possible in Oktibbeha County.

Deputies said you should not approach Outlaw.

If you see him, call 911 or Golden Triangle Crime Stoppers.

Columbus woman accused of printing fake checks

LOWNDES COUNTY, Miss. (WCBI) – A Columbus woman was accused of printing fake checks and having other people cash them.

Sharrell Anderson, 37, was charged with racketeering.

Lowndes County Detective Lt. Tony Cooper said Anderson would print the bogus checks and have others cash the checks. It’s believe she is the ringleader of the operation.

Others have been arrested in scheme.

Deputies searched Anderson’s 20th Street home on September 12 and had been searching for her for a couple of weeks.

The total amount of the fake checks is believed to be around  $1,000.

Anderson remains in the Lowndes County jail.

Two men arrested in Chickasaw County for possession of a controlled substance

CHICKASAW COUNTY, Miss. (WCBI) – Chickasaw County deputies found several grams of meth during a traffic stop.

On Tuesday, law officers pulled over Irvin Brown, 62, and Hector Mesa, 34.

The two men were pulled over on Washington Street in Houston because they didn’t have a tag on their vehicle.

Narcotics agents said they found several grams of meth inside the car.

Brown and Mesa face possession of a controlled substance charges.

Tupelo PD asking for help identifying car burglary suspects

TUPELO, Miss. (WCBI) – Tupelo Police Department has asked for help identifying two people accused of breaking into cars and using the victims credit cards.

The duo in these photos were accused of breaking into cars at a restaurant on North Gloster Street.

The suspects then used the victim’s credit cards at a grocery store and drug store.

Anyone with information on the incident is asked to call Crime Stoppers of Northeast Mississippi 1-800-.

Two arrested after illegal drugs found in West Point hotel

CLAY COUNTY, Miss. (WCBI) – Two people were arrested after deputies found illegal drugs in their hotel room in West Point.

Renaldo Carrothers, 44, and Megan Farrell, 32, both faced several drug possession charges.

On Wednesday, Clay County deputies, the Mississippi Bureau of Narcotics and West Point PD executed a search warrant in a room at the Relax Inn.

Sheriff Eddie Scott said investigators found heroin, methamphetamine, marijuana and other illegal narcotics.

Both are still in the Clay County Detention Center.

Man charged with child sex crime in Starkville

STARKVILLE, Miss. (WCBI) – Starkville police charged a man with a child sex crime.

Jessie Lee Carter was charged with molestation.

Court documents alleged Carter touched a child under the age of 18. Investigators said Carter was in a position of authority of the victim.

Child Protective Services was also involved in the case.

Carter remains in jail on a $10,000 bond and a hold from a sheriff’s department in Georgia.

Law enforcement asking help identifying business burglars

LOWNDES COUNTY, Miss. (WCBI) – Lowndes County detectives have asked for information on two business burglars.

The two people in this photo is wanted for questioning by deputies.

The suspects were accused of burglarizing several businesses in Lowndes County.

Man charged with possession of gun reported stolen during car burglary

STARKVILLE, Miss. (WCBI) – A string of recent car break-ins in Starkville led to a stolen gun arrest.

Travrise Smith, 18, was charged with possession of a stolen gun.

The gun had been reported stolen after a car was broken into on Park Circle.

In September, Starkville PD said almost all car burglaries reported during the month were targets of opportunity because of car doors being unlocked.

Man charged with aggravated assault after fight breaks out in front of Oxford restaurant

OXFORD, Miss. (WCBI) – A Sunday morning brawl landed a Batesville man in jail.

Johnny James faced an aggravated assault charge.

Oxford PD got a 911 call around 1:25 Sunday morning about a fight. A scuffle broke out between a group of men on North Lamar Boulevard in front of a restaurant.

Once officers arrived, they found a man with multiple stab wounds on his leg and chest.

The suspect ran off, but was captured a short time later.

The suspect was booked into the Lafayette County Jail. His bond was set at $25,000.

Investigators searching for multi-county credit card fraud suspect

MONROE COUNTY, Miss. (WCBI) – Monroe County investigators are searching for a suspect accused of spending thousands on a taken fraudulently credit card.

The suspect has used the card in the Columbus, West Point, and Aberdeen areas.

He has charged around $5,000 worth of items.

Anyone with information on the suspect’s identity is asked to call Monroe County Sheriff’s Office at 662-369-2468.

149 arrested during Operation Triple Beam in North Mississippi

GOLDEN TRIANGLE AREA, Miss. (WCBI) – An initiative between federal, state, and local law enforcement led to the arrests of 149 people in North Mississippi.

The suspects were arrested on charges including violent crimes, drug crimes, and gang-related crimes. $675,820 worth of narcotics and narcotics-related proceeds was also found by law enforcement during the investigation.

Operation Triple Beam is a U.S. Marshals led effort in the Golden Triangle to reduce crime by bringing together law enforcement at all levels to identify and arrest violent fugitives, target violent gang activity, and get information on individuals committing crimes in Northeast Mississippi.

The operation started on July 15 and ended on August 30.

During the investigation, about 50 gang members were arrested or validated by law enforcement. 155 registered sex offenders living in Northeast Mississippi and the Golden Triangle area were checked for compliance with sex offender registration requirements.

Compliance checks were also conducted on eight moderate and high-risk federal and state probationers.

Law enforcement agencies participating in the Operation Triple Beam initiative included:  U.S. Marshal’s Service, U.S. Attorney’s Office, U.S. Probation, U.S. Customs and Border Protection Air and Marine Unit, Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms, Mississippi Bureau of Narcotics, Mississippi Highway Patrol, Mississippi Bureau of Investigation, Mississippi Department of Corrections, Mississippi Air National Guard, West Point Police Department, Lowndes County Sheriff’s Department, Columbus Police Department, Clay County Sheriff’s Department, Oktibbeha County Sheriff’s Department, and the Starkville Police Department.
