
COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) – An elementary school teacher has been charged with attempted murder after allegedly driving her vehicle and her child into Columbus Lake.
34-year-old Cari Cullum was arrested over the weekend. She will officially go before a judge Monday.
Columbus police said the incident happened September 21st at the East Bank landing boat ramp on Wilkins-Wise Road.
Investigators believe Cullum drove her vehicle into the water with her toddler in the backseat of the car.
Sources told WCBI Cullum was attempting to commit suicide.
By the time officers arrived, a friend had pulled Cullum and her daughter out of the vehicle.
Police believe the car had been backed into the water.
CPD also confirmed she also charged with misdemeanor DUI back in August.
Cullum did teach at Hamilton Elementary.
Monroe County Schools Superintendent Brian Jernigan said he cannot discuss Cullum’s employment due to an ongoing personnel issue.
Cullum’s three children are in the care of another person.
Her bond has not been set.
